He also bows to Buddha (traditionally) to ask for protection for himself and his opponent and for an honorable fight. The fighter then performs the Ram Muay, whose simple movements demonstrate a fighter's control and style. Each fighter has the option to perform the Ram Muay on each side of the ring to demonstrate his/her prowess to the audience. The Ram Muay is a personal ritual, ranging from the very complex to the very simple, and often contains clues about who trained the fighter and where the fighter is from. - The practitioner may wear a headband called a Mongkhon and armbands known as Pra Jiad during the ceremony, and the Ram Muay may be accompanied by music. - The Mongkhon is unique to Thai Boxing and not be worn in Cambodia or Burma. 5. KICKS: - All standard martial art / Kickboxing Kicks are Allowed. - You can NOT use The Cartwheel Kick. - Cartwheel Kick is illegal because your gloves can not touch the ground before you strike because when they do, you are considered a DOWN FIGHTER. DIRECT SIDE / THRUST KICKS: - Direct (Side Kick or Thrust Kick Style) kicks to the front of a fighters legs (Mainly 6 inches above to 6 inches below the knee) are NOT ALLOWED. 7. FLASH KNOCKDOWNS - Flash Knockdown Rule is in effect for all bouts. - In TRUE Muay Thai as with these rules, FLASH KNOCKDOWNS, where the knocked down fighter rises up immediately after being knocked down are usually not counted as knockdowns with a standing 8 count. - HOWEVER, if the fighter is "ROCKED" by the shot taken, the referee can make the decision to give an 8 count if he/she feels necessary, no matter how fast the fighter rises after the fall. 8. CLINCHING - Clinching is only allowed when opponents are FACING EACH OTHER. - Clinching is allowed as long as 1 fighter is ACTIVE WITHIN the clinch. - If there is inactivity for a period of 3 seconds, the referee will break the fighters. - Fighters may NOT grab an opponent from behind and lift to throw. 9. BACK BREAKING - You can NOT Grab (Clinching) around your opponent’s lower spine and hyper-extending their back (Pulling) in a “back breaking” move forcing your opponents body to bend backwards hyper-extending their back. 10. WAI THROWS - TRIPS - SWEEPS - Taking an opponent around the waist with both arms and twisting them off balance so they will fall is legal. - NO HIP THROWS - Over the hip throws such as in Japanese arts like Judo, Jutitsu, Karate, Sambo, or San Shou are ILLEGAL! TO DESCRIBE: - You can NOT use the hip or shoulder to throw an opponent in any kind of judo throw or reap. - You can NOT step across, or in front of, your opponent's leg with your leg and bring your opponent over your hip. - You can NOT grab the opponent’s hip in a waist lock and throw them using a hip throw - You can NOT grab an opponent’s arm, turning and using the calf and back of the thigh (hamstring muscle group) to sweep an opponent’s legs from under them - You can NOT grab an opponent and fall backward to throw your opponent. - You can NOT perform a rugby style tackle on the legs and waist of an opponent to throw them. - You can NOT grab an opponent’s waist from behind, then place a leg between the opponent’s legs, pulling the opponent backwards over the leg and hip. - You can NOT grab an opponent from below the waist and lift them up and throw them. THROWING & SWEEPING - Fighter may "KICK" (roundhouse or using the top of your foot) their opponents legs out striking with the top of their foot or shin, NOT the instep as in a karate style sweep. - You can not sweep with the instep of your foot or your calf. - You can not lock an opponent’s neck (Like a Headlock) and execute a hip throw. - You can not grab an opponent in the clinch and then sweep their legs out. - You can not catch an opponent’s leg and using the calf to trip/sweep them off their feet - You can not trip your opponent with your ankle. - You can not leg sweep or kick the back of the supporting leg out of your opponent using your calf or inside of your foot. - You can not trap your opponent’s arms in a waist lock and lift them to throw ILLEGAL TRIP: - If you position your foot next to your opponent and twist them over your foot you must clear the leg as your opponent falls or it is an illegal trip. - An athlete CAN spin or pull an opponent over the inside or outside of the leg and dump him on the ground. - However the leg being used to manipulate and dump the opponent to the ground can NOT stay in that position as the opponent goes to the floor. - If it is set and stays in that position, that too is an illegal throw (tripping). In other words, the leg must clear immediately after the opponent is pulled or tripped over the knee. - Clear means that the leg must be moved out of the way BEFORE the opponent hits the canvas. - This means skipping the leg or slightly jumping to the side (as long as it is moved from the original position). - Strangely, this means an athlete can trip over a leg but must move the tripping leg while the opponent falls to the ground, or it will be deemed illegal and called a trip. NECK WRESTLING: - If in a clinch (locking an opponent’s neck) with arms around each other's shoulder, as to deliver or defend from an elbow strike, twisting the opponent using the upper body in such a way that you will fall to the ground is allowed. - If in a clinch (locking an opponent’s neck) you may NOT execute a hip to shoulder or hip throw. - By using neck and shoulder manipulation, you can spin and throw/dump an opponent to the canvas without using any part of your body as a barrier. This is fully legal. LIFTING: - You can NOT in any way lift an opponent off of the ground to throw them. - Common to see an athlete clinch their opponent around the waist, lift their opponent off the canvas and then twist and throw them around to the side and onto the canvas. - This is illegal and points could be deducted if you continue to use this move. 11. PLOWING - Fighters are allowed to catch their opponent's leg and take 2 steps forward. - You can "dump" a person if you catch their leg and throw it back towards them causing them to fall backwards but must do so within 2 steps (see previous). - You can also catch under their knee while they are doing a swing knee and topple them over backwards but must do so within 2 steps (see previous). AFTER TWO STEPS: - The fighter holding the leg must STRIKE before taking a third step or more or let go! - You can not hold a leg and charge/push an opponent to the ropes. - You can not catch an opponent’s leg and use your other arm to push them off balance while taking more than two steps forward. 12. LANDING - Stepping on a fallen opponent is illegal. Commonly one sees an athlete twist and pull an opponent over the side of their body (and then land on top), this is illegal. - It is considered an Intentional Foul when a fighter plans, with the sole intention, of falling on top of their opponent to either strike with their knee or to intentionally hurt their opponent, by making it look like an accident. 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. • About Steve Fossum | International Fight

Steve Fossum International Fight Sports President / CEO and Master Sensei Steve Fossum used to run one of the largest martial arts schools in the Nation. It was 3 levels and over 17,000 square feet in size with over 400 students. However, the growth of organizations such as the IKF (International Kickboxing Federation) as well as the ISCF (International Sport Combat Federation) forced him to make a decision as to his time and efforts. Created in August of 1992, the IKF experienced its main growth between 1997 and 1999 after the website, www.IKFKickboxing.com was created. Because of this growth, Mr. Fossum had an intense travel schedule and was on the road a lot, traveling to IKF events around the world. From this growth, Mr. Fossum was forced to make a decision as to where his time, energy and efforts would best be utilized best. Lucky for all of us in the organization, he choose the path of the IKF. However, his choice was not because he didn't like teaching martial arts. Instead it was due to 2 basic issues. 1: The loss of desire to compete competitively with what many of us know as "The Black Belt Factory Schools" or McDojos. When he first opened his school in Newcastle it was his 12th martial arts school. His competition was with 4 good schools in a 10 mile radius. By the time he closed his commercial karate school 8 years later in 1998, 11 schools had opened up within that 10 mile radius of his offering free uniforms, quick belt promotions, easy black belts and many more marketing incentives for new students to sign-up. If he wanted to compete with them he had to face the facts. Offer quicker belt promotions, make the requirements much easier and make black belt a lot easier. It was a move he didn't want to make. Faced with this reality he was also juggling his time with his karate school and the growth of the IKF. With these two issues at hand, in December of 1998 he choose to close his commercially operated karate school. In doing so, he kept a small handfull of students to train privately. However, his main focus was no on the growth of the IKF. After several changes around the facility, he reopened in June of 1999 as a Private Club. The main gym floor is over 9,000 square feet in size and the upstairs offices are approximately 3,000 sq ft.. The facility would be the new home for the IKF as well as his private Martial Arts school and Ringside Gym, (www.ringsidegym.com ) operated by former IKF Amateur Champion - Greg Kirkpatrick teaching both Kickboxing & Boxing. Eventually Mr. Fossum's top ranking Martial Arts Student, Conrad Woodall opened his own commercial school, Woodall's Self Defense & Fitness using the 4,000 square feet that was utilized for the Private Karate school. Later Woodall would expand to open his own location a few miles down the road. Also in the facility is a chiropractor office and band rehearsal studio. In 1999, Fossum brought on the International Sport Combat Federation (ISCF) for his IKF Kickboxing Promoters who were looking for neutral regulation of what was then called No Hold Barred Fighting, later known as Mixed Martial Arts or MMA. The ISCF was the first non promoting, regulatory - sanctioning body for Mixed Martial Arts the world. In the early stages of the ISCF Fossum worked with ISCF World Advisor Mike Carlson in fine tuning the ISCF. Like the growth of the IKF, today the ISCF is the largest regulatory / sanctioning body for mixed martial arts in the world. The ISCF has sanctioned events and or ISCF Title bouts throughout the USA is states such as Georgia, Tennessee, Missouri, Nevada, Idaho, Louisiana, Virginia, Washington DC, Oklahoma, New Jersey, Wyoming, South Dakota, Montana, Nebraska, Minnesota, Wisconsin, Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Alabama, Arkansas, North Dakota, Michigan, Massachusetts, Kansas, Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Florida, Ohio, Connecticut, South Carolina, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and California. The ISCF has also sanctioned events in Canada, South Africa, Mexico, England, Scotland, Australia, India, Iran and even an armed forces event in Iraq in 2009. In the spring of 2008 Fossum officially formed International Fight Sports. (IFS - www.IFightSports.com ) IFS became the chief parent company that oversees all of his Fight Sport organizations & Companies. At this time, Boxing was a fight sport not included under the IFS umbrella. So in March of 2010 Fossum created the IAB - www.IABBoxing.com which was actually two different Boxing organizations. International Amateur Boxing for Amateur Boxing and the International Association of Boxing for Professional Boxing. All 3 regulatory / sanctioning bodies, IKF, ISCF & IAB were now under the worldwide umbrella of the International Fight Sports organization. TRAINING Mr. Fossum started his martial arts training in 1976 in Tae Kwon Do. He later studied Shotokan, an American freestyle known as System 5 Combat Karate and a military system known as STIHC (Pronounced Sti-Hick, Special Training In Hand to Hand Combat.) Other styles he has trained in include Kenpo, JuJitsu and Aikido. Today he holds ranks in several martial art styles including Black Belt ranks in 4 different styles of martial arts. He has also won numerous titles in karate point fighting, full contact kickboxing and hand to hand combat competition. He's been operating a martial arts school since 1982. TIMELINE JUNE, 1976 First started formal karate training - American Tae Kwon Do. Went on to achieve a 2nd degree Black Belt in this style. MAY, 1977 Begin training of Shotokan karate along with Tae Kwon Do. Went on to achieved the rank of Shodan in December of 1999. (1st degree Black Belt) in this style.) APRIL, 1978 Achieved 1st of 2 Degrees of Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do. JANUARY, 1979 Started training in System 5 Combat Karate. Focusing on Private Instruction which allowed for far quicker learning. MARCH, 1979 Begin training in Full Contact Kickboxing. DECEMBER, 1979 Achieved Shodan in Shotokan Karate. APRIL, 1980 Begin training in STIHC (Special Training In Hand To Hand Combat) MARCH, 1981 Achieved 1st Black Belt in System 5 Combat Karate. Went on to achieve *Masters Black Belt Rank (9th Degree) in this style and continues to teach this style today. (*) In System 5 Combat Karate, a Masters Rank is very different than in "Traditional Karate". System 5 Combat Karate is NOT a followed path of traditional karate with traditional aspects such as Katas and Forms. Although many of the movements and techniques are exact movements as one would learn in traditional karate (side kick, pivot punch etc.) it is more like attaining a certification in a specialized combat course. This is mainly due to the testing and attaining the material of the system which is tested by a hands on practical application method that must be proven in active combat drills as opposed to standing movement of single techniques. Better put, "It must be experienced in order to be known." For words alone, as many things, cannot describe it. JUNE, 1984 Achieved civilian certification for Drill Instructor for STIHC. PRESENT President/CEO International Fight Sports. Commissioner/President IKF Kickboxing & Muay Thai. Commissioner/President ISCF MMA. Commissioner/President IAB Boxing. Instructor for Combat Martial Arts. If a fighter's rear is square to the ropes, BOTH feet become targets for a sweep. IKF TOURNAMENT GENERAL RULES: FULL RULES - MUAY THAI STYLE / ADULTS OVER 18: 1. CLOTHING: SHORTS - Shorts are Mandatory in all Muay Thai Bouts. - NOT PANTS! - The bottom of the shorts must be 3 inches ABOVE THE KNEE. - ALL Women must wear a minimum of a Sports Bra with Padding. 2. SHIN AND INSTEP PADS - Mandatory - Must be secured to the leg by WHITE MEDICAL TAPE. - NO DUCT TAPE! - ALLOWED: Cloth Slip On ONLY! NO Velcro Closure & NO METAL! 3. KNEES - Only Below the Shoulder Line. - No Knee strikes are allowed to the groin or joints (Knees) of the leg. 4. Direct (Side Kick Style) kicks to the front of a fighters legs are NOT ALLOWED. 5. ELBOWS - Allowed To The Body & Head. - Fighters Must Wear IKF Approved Elbow Pads. - NO Dropping, Spiking, Downward or Rising Elbows that make contact with ANY "Point - Tip" of the Elbow. - FOREARM STRIKES - Some may call this an "Elbow", However, it is not. A "FOREARM" strike that strikes HORIZONTAL to the body such as in Martial Arts "ARE ALLOWED". 6. FLASH KNOCKDOWNS Flash Knockdown Rule is in effect for all bouts. In TRUE Muay Thai as with these rules, FLASH KNOCKDOWNS, where the knocked down fighter rises up immediately after being knocked down are usually not counted as knockdowns with a standing 8 count. HOWEVER, if the fighter is "ROCKED" by the shot taken, the referee can make the decision to give an 8 count if he/she feels necessary, no matter how fast the fighter rises after the fall. 7. CLINCHING - Clinching is allowed as long as 1 fighter is ACTIVE WITHIN the clinch. If there is inactivity for a period of 3 seconds, the referee will break the fighters. 8. NO HIP THROWS Over the hip throws such as in Japanese arts like Judo, JuJitsu, Karate, Sambo, or San Shou are illegal. You can NOT use the hip or shoulder to throw an opponent in any kind of judo throw or reap. No stepping across, or in front of, your opponent's leg with your leg and bringing your opponent over your hip. 9. Taking an opponent around the waist with both arms and twisting them off balance so they will fall is legal. 10. NECK WRESTLING If in a clinch with arms around each other's shoulder, as to deliver or defend from an elbow strike, twisting the opponent using the upper body in such a way that you will fall to the ground is allowed. By using neck and shoulder manipulation, you can spin and throw/dump an opponent to the canvas without using any part of your body as a barrier. This is fully legal. 11. PLOWING Fighters are allowed to catch their opponent's leg and take 1 step forward. After 1 step, the fighter holding the leg must STRIKE before taking a second step or more or let go! You can not hold a leg and charge an opponent to the ropes. You can "dump" a person if you catch their leg and throw it back towards them causing them to fall backwards but must do so within 2 steps (see previous). You can also catch under their knee while they are doing a swing knee and topple them over backwards but must do so within 2 steps (see previous). 12. Stepping on a fallen opponent is illegal. Commonly one sees an athlete twist and pull an opponent over the side of their body (and then land on top), this is illegal. 13. It is considered an Intentional foul when a fighter plans, with the sole intention, of falling on top of their opponent to either strike with their knee or to intentionally hurt their opponent, by making it look like an accident. 14. ILLEGAL TRIP If you position your foot next to your opponent and twist them over your foot you must clear the leg as your opponent falls or it is an illegal trip. An athlete CAN spin or pull an opponent over the inside or outside of the leg and dump him on the ground. However the leg being used to manipulate and dump the opponent to the ground can NOT stay in that position as the opponent goes to the floor. If it is set and stays in that position, that too is an illegal throw (tripping). In other words, the leg must clear immediately after the opponent is pulled or tripped over the knee. Clear means that the leg must be moved out of the way BEFORE the opponent hits the canvas. This means skipping the leg or slightly jumping to the side (as long as it is moved from the original position). Strangely, this means an athlete can trip over a leg but must move the tripping leg while the opponent falls to the ground, or it will be deemed illegal and called a trip. 15. SWEEPING Sweeps (With instep of foot) are not allowed but a fighter may "KICK" his/her opponents supporting leg with the top of their foot or shin, NOT the instep as in a karate style sweep. You can not grab an opponent in the clinch and then sweep their legs out. Common example is to kick the back of the supporting leg out of the opponent using the back of one's own leg or calf, this is illegal. All you can do is KICK (roundhouse or using the top of your foot) an opponent's legs out (shin, instep). 16. LIFTING You can NOT in any way lift an opponent off of the ground to throw them. Common to see an athlete clinch their opponent around the waist, lift their opponent off the canvas and then twist and throw them around to the side and onto the canvas. This is illegal and points could be deducted if you continue to use this move. 17. Spinning Backhands/Fists are Legal. IKF TOURNAMENT GENERAL RULES: MODIFIED - MUAY THAI STYLE JUNIORS AGES 8-17: 1. CLOTHING SHORTS - Shorts are Mandatory in all Muay Thai Bouts. - NOT PANTS! - The bottom of the shorts must be 3 inches ABOVE THE KNEE. - ALL Women must wear a minimum of a Sports Bra with Padding. 2. This rule has come from the fact that in the first 3 years of the tournament, EVERY Protested bout that was either reviewed by video or had a scheduled "EXTRA ROUND FIGHT", ALL of them came out with the same winner. DIVISION REQUEST CHANGES ONCE YOU ARE ALREADY REGISTERED: You cannot move from your originally registered division / weightclass or rule style once registered UNLESS there are: NO OTHER FIGHTERS in your division / weightclass. The division / weightclass you are "REQUESTING" to move to has equal or more fighters who all have equal or greater skill level as the division you originally registered in. BOOKING FIGHTS PRIOR TO THE IKF CLASSICS: Once registered, We respectfully ask all fighters "NOT" to book a bout 45 days prior to the Tournament. The reason for this is because if you get injured or stopped by a TKO or KO inside 45 days prior to the Tournament, you would be given an automatic medical suspension that would at the very least be 30 days or more. If this happens, you would also drastically hurt the other fighters in your bracket. This would be worse if there are only you and one other fighter in your bracket. ESPECIALLY if the other fighter has paid travel expenses to come a long way for the Tournament.
